Analyze the different types of Leucocytes (WBCs) and their functions.
a. Leucocytes are also known as white blood cells (WBCs) because they are colourless due to the lack of haemoglobin.
b. They are nucleated and average 6000-8000 mm⁻³ of blood.
c. Neutrophils, eosinophils, and basophils are different types of agranulocytes.
d. Neutrophils are the most abundant cells (60-65 per cent) of the total WBCs.
e. Basophils are the least abundant WBCs (0.5-1 per cent).
f. Neutrophils and monocytes are phagocytic cells that destroy foreign organisms.
g. Eosinophils are associated with allergic reactions and resist infections.
h. Basophils secrete histamine, serotonin, and heparin and are involved in inflammatory reactions.
